About St. Mary's
At St. Mary’s High School, tradition plays a strategic role in our mission: to provide a learning environment in which students can reach their full potential - academically, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. At SMHS, the best of yesterday’s traditions are combined with the best of today’s educational tools and techniques for a solid college-preparatory foundation. Our classes, with an average student-to-teacher ratio of 18-to-1, are exciting and challenging, led by faculty members who are committed to the art of teaching.
Devoted to developing the whole person, SMHS also provides a wide range of sports and extra-curricular activities, from basketball to drama. Our program of religious training in the Catholic tradition is designed to build strong character and instill a spirit of lifelong service.
St. Mary's Crest
The St. Mary's High School crest has proudly represented the school's core identity and values for more than seven decades. First and foremost, the crest bears the cross, the symbol of Christ. Bracketing the cross are the letters "OSJ" and "OSM," which stand for "O suffering Jesus" and "O sorrowful Mary." Above the cross is a crown signifying the triumph over death of our Lord and our Mother. The latin motto "Deus Providebit," taken from Genesis 22:8, translates as "God will provide" - a fitting phrase for every SMHS generation. Finally, the crest bears the school name and location - proudly stating who we are and where we live out our Christian mission.
You will find this crest proudly displayed on everything from this website and school stationary to class pictures, yearbooks, and SMHS apparel.
St. Mary's Mascot
The St. Mary's High School mascot is the pirate. And while its origin as our mascot is unknown, we are certain as to its character and purpose - to proudly represent the best that St. Mary's High School has to offer on the playing field, pitch, or court.
The most recent portrayal of our identity is "Rusty," the statue that stands guard in the courtyard, watching over our students. Anyone who has seen Rusty knows the character with which he was sculpted and the strength with which he stands.
Our new athletic logo, pictured here, is inspired by Rusty and demonstrates a similar strength and spirit that is unique to an SMHS Pirate. Like the school crest, our pirate logo can be found throughout the school, particularly in our athletic programs.
